Changing the narrative: Why am I so lazy to why does my body need this much rest?

November 26, 2021

I have always questioned myself on my work ethic and just ability to get things done in an attempt to be a more efficient and collected individual. What I failed to realize as a full-time university student is that with a busy schedule comes a lack of time and furthermore, dismissal of my personal needs such as prioritizing my health. I think this pattern may be common among many other students as well. What struck a chord was the following post.

As I evaluate my life, I know I take on more responsibilities because I understand that deep down, I am capable of handling them! Why would anyone purposely choose to take on more with the goal of doing less? So the following question arises, am I doing too much, hence I’m exhausted or am I just too lazy and procrastination has taken the best of me? Initially, I used to think the latter was the main conclusion for my tiredness. No matter what I did from drinking tons of caffeine to water, getting more sleep, limiting screen time, etc. etc., I was always SO tired.

After being tired of being tired...I decided to visit the doctor. I soon realized that I was deficient in many vitamins which may have held association with my frequently experienced fatigue, lack of motivation and perhaps even anxiety. Can you imagine how toxic and harsh we may be towards ourselves when we fail to go about being our best selves? We really need to examine the whys. Why is my body needing this much rest, why do I feel the need to sleep in more, why is my body not able to withstand the daily tasks that were once accomplished without question?

More often than not, it’s because sweetheart your body is a machine and it needs adequate fuel to function properly!

I’d highly recommend putting your health first this school year. Try not to skip that routine check-up, go get that blood test done, educate yourself and be an advocate for your own health!

As social media is often the main source of information for many as part of being so easily accessible (me included; no judgements), here are some Instagram accounts I would recommend in order to improve your lifestyle as a student!

If there are any other accounts you’d like to share that may be useful for students, share them with us on Instagram: @otstudentlife.

I’ll end off by saying to be your best, you must recognize what voids are existing in your life and work to fill them in if that is possible. Be gentle, be kind to yourself as that is what will allow you to grow and function at your best!
