Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Things To Do This Winter Break!

December 18, 2023

You did it! We all did it!! You have successfully completed the fall semester! You have worked hard this whole semester, especially during exam season, and now you have made it. I want to congratulate you because university is not easy and you have finished another semester. Good job guys!!!

That being said, it's time for your well-deserved break. Take some time to relax and spend time with those you love. I know that during the semester it feels like you have no time and can go months without seeing your friends… so take this time to hang out with your friends and family! Also, take time for yourself and take time to do nothing at all, because it feels like during the semester you always had something on your mind that constantly needed to be done, but now you can just relax and enjoy having to do nothing at all.

But once you are over the: ‘doing nothing phase’ what can you do now? Now it is time for things to do!

Self-care Day

During the semester it is so hard to find time to take care of yourself. So, take a day by yourself or with all your friends/family to have a self-care day! Does not have to be anything fancy, go to your local dollar store and grab some face masks, take an ‘everything shower', and relax with your favourite show.

Games Night

Sometimes during the winter, you don't feel like going out because the weather is so cold and dark, and trust me I get that! A really fun way to spice up your night in with your family/friends is to have a game night! Don’t worry you don't have to purchase a bunch of games to get this done, some games you can play online include, Charades, Spyfall, and Pictionary

Cook something

This semester it feels like all I had was takeout! As a student, it's so hard to make time to learn and cook new recipes. But this break is a perfect time to learn how to cook quick and easy meals that you can master right now to have quick lunches during the semester. Don't just limit yourself to that though: try to make a fancy dish a treat yourself!

Secret Santa With Friends

I love doing this with my friends every year! We use Elfster to help generate who gets who! It's a perfect way to get everyone together during the break because who doesn't want their gift?  You could also spice it up by making a theme for all the gifts. Setting a budget is also essential since we are all still students, we keep it to $30!

Reorganize Your Room/ Closest

My room looks like a MESS during exam season because all I can focus on during exam season is EXAMS! But during the winter break, I love doing a room reset! Donate all the clothes you don't wear anymore or throw out those things that you just never had the chance to during the semester! I love walking into the near year with a neat and almost brand-new room! You will thank yourself during the school year when you don't have time to do any of that.
