Who the heck is S-Tech?

The Sustainable Technology Club, commonly known as S-Tech, is the newest club at OntarioTech with a focus on the innovation and integration of new sustainable technology and practices. Founded and co-created by Samin Habibi-Luevano and Angayilmanu Mathew, S-Tech is less than a year old! Their mission is to be a catalyst for positive change through support, empowerment, and progress for a better tomorrow.

Lemon trees are a great investment as they produce fruit almost all year round, the inclusion of lemons in one’s diet improves heart health and most importantly, citrus plants tend to be left unharmed by insects! They are low maintenance and a great addition to any garden. The S-Tech team decided to sell this product as a way to create a revenue stream to become self-sufficient and fund future projects. S-Tech member, Will Driscoll, comments on this initiative by stating, “It was our first fundraiser and was a great learning experience. It really helped us grow as a club and will enable us to work on many of our upcoming projects.”

A gravity-fed hydroponic gardening system seems very complex and scientific; however, it is an easy concept! The goal of this system is to eliminate the need for soil by nutrient-rich water which moves throughout. By including timers, sensors, and planting vertically, it is much easier for the average consumer to maintain their indoor garden with little work. One of S-Tech’s members, Laura Heyns, gives a little bit of insight into the hydroponic system, “The water enters the system through the top and drains down to the bottom where oxygen and nutrients are added then it’s pumped back to the top [...] the system holds 48 plants, that will be lettuce for the first growth.”. Another member Angayil Manu Mathew gave further information about the progress of the prototype hydroponic system, “Turning an idea into reality.”.

S-Tech is looking to expand into Durham Region high schools to ensure the future of this project while inspiring youth to be interested in environmentalism! By educating the general public on healthy eating without breaking the bank and sustainable consumerism; their approach will continue to be educational and innovative. Co-Founder, Samin Habibi-Luevano, gives insight for future plans,  “After completing the construction of the prototype we hope to begin testing the system’s efficiency and begin planning for a large-scale design.”.
