Why Ramadan is So Special to Me
March 18, 2025
Ramadan is here again! And no, you’re not crazy for thinking it comes at a different time each year—Ramadan follows the lunar calendar, meaning it shifts about 10–12 days earlier every year.
For me, Ramadan is not just about fasting from pre-dawn to sunset; it’s a time of renewal, family ties, and deep fulfillment. Here’s why this month holds such a special place in my heart!
1. Renewal of My Faith
It always feels like Ramadan arrives at the perfect time—when I need it most. Over the year, bad habits creep into my life, and my spiritual discipline weakens. But Ramadan is my opportunity to hit the reset button. There is just something about Ramadan that makes you want to be a better Muslim.
2. Family Time
Ramadan wouldn’t be the same without iftar (the meal to break the fast) and suhoor (the pre-dawn meal) with my family. We don’t always eat together during the rest of the year, but in Ramadan, we have no choice! Gathering around the table, sharing food, and making dua (supplication) before breaking our fast creates a beautiful sense of togetherness.
After iftar, my family tries to have a small discussion where we reflect on something we’ve learned—whether it’s a new Islamic perspective, a Quranic lesson, or a personal experience from the day.
3. The Ramadan Series from My Favorite Scholars
One of my absolute favourite parts of Ramadan is the incredible lecture series released by my favourite scholars. I love, love, LOVE how these series unite the entire ummah (the global Muslim community). I see TikToks of people from around the world talking about the same Omar Suleiman series, and it feels like we’re all students in one big classroom. There’s no other time of the year when I feel this kind of shared excitement for Islamic learning. Some of my must-watch scholars are:
Yasir Qadhi- Whisper of The Divine
Safina Society- Stories of the Awliya
Nouman Ali Khan- Amazed by the Quran
4. The Peace I Feel
I once read a quote that stuck with me:
"Why do you feel so peaceful in Ramadan? Because you are finally doing what your soul was created to do—worship Allah."
Every year, this proves to be true. There’s a unique peace that settles in my heart during this month, and I truly believe it’s because my priorities shift away from the chaos of daily life and toward worship, gratitude, and self-reflection. With less distraction from the outside world, I focus on prayer, Quran recitation, and acts of kindness. This inner peace is something I wish I could hold onto long after Ramadan ends.
5. Taraweeh – The Night Prayers
One of the most special aspects of Ramadan is Taraweeh—the extra night prayers performed in congregation at the mosque. There’s something incredible about standing in prayer with the community, listening to the recitation of the Quran, and feeling spiritually connected to everyone around me. Even though my feet get sore from standing for long periods, the experience is always worth it. The sense of unity and devotion during Taraweeh makes it one of my favourite parts of Ramadan!
