Transitioning into Canada as an International Student

August 12, 2024

Life unfolds in stages, sometimes urging us to leave our comfort zones and embrace the unknown. Two years ago, I gathered all my courage and took a deep breath, deciding to embark on a journey to Canada – a place that was then my "unknown". However, before I delve into this pivotal decision, here's a glimpse into my journey:

Back home in Nigeria, I had already completed three out of five years of a nursing program. Because of my previous university experience, I was confident that my transition to a Canadian university would be smooth. I arrived with a clear timeline for graduation in mind and had everything planned out in advance. Little did I know, life had other plans for me. To my surprise, I discovered that I would have to restart the nursing program due to differences in the educational curriculum. This news shattered my heart and threatened to extinguish the hopes I carried within me. Despite this setback, I clung to my dream of becoming a nurse, even if it meant embracing a new path. Determined not to give up, I reminded myself that while life might sometimes throw curveballs my way, it is up to me to make the detours worth the journey.

Fast forward to a few weeks before lectures began. I found myself buried in mandatory nursing-specific modules for onboarding. The course registration deadlines, on the other hand, were fast approaching and I felt utterly lost in this new system. I didn’t know anyone at the school who could guide me, and panic began to take hold. Thankfully, before the deadline, I found the contact information for the first-year academic advisor on the school website, and she assisted me in navigating the course registration process. You might think that from this point on, everything would be smooth sailing, but that wasn’t the case at all!

As lectures began, I quickly realized how different everything was from what I was accustomed to at my home university. During the first few weeks of lectures, I struggled to find my course outlines and understand how to access assignments. Unlike my previous experience with paper-based assignments, I was now expected to submit everything electronically, adding to my stress. Coming from a country with a tropical climate, experiencing snowfall for the first time was both exhilarating and challenging. I was captivated by the snow, yet I had to layer up my clothing to stay warm during winter lectures.

Although grateful for the opportunity to experience these changes, I often felt overwhelmed. However, with time, I learned to cope. I found solace in praying to God, connecting with my family, and cooking familiar dishes from home. I also learned the importance of pausing, reflecting, and engaging in activities that brought me joy.

Now, my advice to every international student is this: amidst the whirlwind of change, don’t lose sight of yourself. The journey won’t always be rosy. There will be moments when you deeply miss your family and friends back home but always look for the silver lining. Gradually, as you strive to make every moment in Canada count, learn to take breaks and extend grace to yourself. Pursue your passions and cherish connections with your loved ones.

Like me, you might already hold some set expectations in your heart but remember to keep flexibility in your mind that will help you adapt your expectations to reality and remain resilient in the face of change. Also, know that you're never alone in this journey. More people are willing to help than you might already know or realize; simply reach out and ask. Don't hesitate to seek support from the school’s resources and community, and remember that you have all it takes to achieve your goals.

As I wrap up, I urge you to never let worry or fear overshadow your dreams. Remember, the entire world, including myself, is rooting for you. With determination and resilience, making Ontario Tech University and Canada your home away from home is entirely within your reach!
