Horror Movies Ranked from Never Sleep Again to So Bad, it’s So Bad
October 25, 2021
Never Sleep Again
A Quiet Place (2018), Bird Box (2018), His House (2020), Midsommar (2019), In the Tall Grass (2019), Gerald’s Game (2017)
His House (2020)
As we move into a new generation of horror, directors have found new ways to haunt our dreams. From a Quiet Place to Bird Box, audiences are moving away from gore to psychological thrillers. This tier is movies that make me afraid to turn off the light. One of my favourites over the past few years has been "His House" (2020); A slow-burn thriller focusing on the new life of a South Sudan refugee couple trying to settle in their new English town. The movie will keep you on the edge of your seat as you try to figure out what is real. I recommend watching with lights on and with friends.
Classics
SAW (2004), Friday the 13th (1984), Halloween (1978), Pet Seminary (1989), Us (2019), Urban Legend (1998), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
SAW (2004)
Classics like "Friday the 13th", "Halloween", and so forth are found on every Halloween binge list and shaped the horror genre into what we know today; however, there is room for instant classics such as "Us". This tier contains foundational horror movies that every fan of the genre needs to view. The "SAW" franchise is a timeless classic that continues to frighten audiences to this day, even after the passing of nearly two decades. It's my favourite series of all time, the traps and development of the storyline keeps audiences on their toes trying to figure out what’s next.
Just for Fun
Escape Room (2019), Fear Street 1994 (2021), Hush (2016), The Witch (2015), The Hills Have Eyes (2006), The Ring (2002), 30 Days of Night (2007)
Escape Room (2019)
Horror doesn’t always have to be scary but rather gets audiences excited! Movies such as "The Ring" and "30 Days of Night", are fun horror movies to enjoy. This tier consists of movies good for those who get scared easily but still want to enjoy the genre. Playing off the trend of escape rooms, this 2019 movie follows the story of 6 strangers who sign up for the chance of a lifetime but quickly find out it's not exactly what they thought. The movie has action, adventure and of course a touch of horror.
So Bad, It’s Funny
Girls with Balls (2018), Scary Movie (2000), Terrifier (2016), The Strangers (2008), The Facility (2012), Slither (2006)
Slither (2006)
Comedy horror combines the elements of the two genres and they fall into one of three types: black comedy, parody and spoof; an example of this would be the Scary Movie Series. These movies have elements of scary, for example- when I was 12 watching this for the first time, it scared me! However now as an adult, it leaves me laughing more than anything.
So Bad, It’s Bad
House At The End Of The Street (2012), The Baby Sitter (2020), The Mist (2007), Open House (2018), A Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Open House (2018)
These are movies that I have ranked 0/10 and have been overhyped and just barely fit into the horror catalogue. When I watched the trailer for Open House, I knew exactly how it was going to end but thought I'd give it a chance. Big waste of time!
