Why starting over as a mature student is scary yet rewarding
October 9, 2024
Why is starting over as a mature student so scary? Especially the older we get. I'm not exactly old, but I'm not young either by a mile. I recently had a breakup with my job and health, which wasn't exactly mutual. A part of me felt relieved about work, sad about my health, and guilty about that relief. It's a mixed bag - I push for later. I would have kept doing the same thing forever.
So this setback isn't too bad. Perhaps it's cause, deep down, like really, really deep down, I always felt I could be someone else—maybe a storyteller, a teacher, an artist, or maybe just someone who loves to cook or bake. Maybe we can blame the last one on Covid-19. My past self would never let me explore these possibilities, but I guess it was time to let her go.
How rare is it to find yourself facing multiple doors of opportunity and having the privilege to choose your adventure? It's terrifying to lose everything you've ever built for yourself, but once you genuinely do—it's only up from there.
Last year, I started at Ontario Tech University (OTU) as a transfer student. I thought it was too late for me to restart. Now, I think "too late" is just a decision someone makes, and as a brown girl, it's definitely something everyone else makes, but I've decided it's not too late for me, which led me to write this for you! Many people start fresh, but the bigger step is to restart!
Embracing the change
Transitioning to a new university is like stepping into a new chapter of life. Having already earned a few credentials, BA and Diplomas, I was no stranger to academic environments. However, transferring to OTU's program required me to adapt to new systems, expectations, and a different campus culture.
The decision to transfer
The decision to transfer wasn't made lightly. After years of gaining experience in design, creative writing, advertising, filmmaking, and visual and digital art, I decided to integrate these skills within a strategic framework. OTU's program offered the perfect blend of creativity and strategy, allowing me to enhance my multidisciplinary approach to communication and media.
Navigating the challenges
One of the biggest challenges of being a mature transfer student is the feeling of starting over. While my previous academic achievements and professional experiences were valuable, I still had to familiarize myself with the new academic environment and social landscape. Here are a few strategies that helped me navigate this transition:
1. Leverage your experience:
Remember to consider the value of your past experiences. They provide a solid foundation and unique perspective to enrich your studies.
2. Get involved:
Joining campus activities and organizations can help you integrate into the university community. There are so many clubs and activities to help you build your current support system and future networking opportunities!
3. Seek support:
Utilize the resources available, such as academic advisors, career services, and counseling. They can provide guidance and support tailored to mature students.
Building a new network
One of the most rewarding aspects of my transfer experience has been meeting new people and building a network at OTU. Engaging with peers, professors, and staff has opened doors to new opportunities and collaborations. For example, participating in the Brilliant Catalyst Podcast Incubator allowed me to work on the Creators4change podcasting project, further expanding my skills and professional network.
Balancing life and studies
Balancing academic commitments with personal responsibilities can be challenging as a mature student. Effective time management and setting clear priorities are crucial. It's essential to find a balance that allows you to succeed academically while also taking care of your personal well-being.
The rewards of starting over
Starting over as a mature student at OTU has been an enriching experience. It's not just about acquiring new knowledge; it's about personal growth, resilience, and discovering new passions. Every challenge faced and overcome adds to your strength and confidence.
Final thoughts
If you're considering starting over as a mature student, whether by transferring to a new program or university, I encourage you to embrace the journey with an open mind and heart. It's never too late to pursue your dreams and redefine your path. The experience might be challenging, but it's also gratifying. At OTU, I've found a supportive community and countless growth opportunities, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next.
And, like always, signing off with love,
Alex
