Games to Play At Your Next Game Night
December 20, 2023
Who doesn't love a game night? A family or friends game night is exactly what you need after a long week. Having a game night helps you get closer to the people you play with while forcing you to think and have fun!
Plus, if you are trying to save money and keep the night fun, games at home are the best way to go. I have counted down the best games that DON'T require you to purchase anything! These are all games you can play if you have a group of people!
My family is big on game nights, we have one almost every weekend. So you can trust me with this list. We have tried many of the games out there and these are the best games that don't require you to buy anything!
Mafia
The classic game of Mafia! It's a game where in your group of people one person is a detective, doctor, and killer. You must decide in a group who is the killer. This game doesn't require anything except a person in your group who chooses to be the narrator, they decide who plays each role. Or, what I like to do is to write down each role on a piece of paper and everyone picks one, on there is written either civilian, doctor, detective, or killer. Check out the link for more detailed instructions!

Gartic Phone
This game is so much fun, you only need a device per person, usually, everyone just uses their phones and if they don't have one a tablet/laptop works just as well! This game is all about drawing, everyone comes up with a funny sentence- the thing I love most about this game is that you can make it personal by adding the names of people in the group doing something silly or maybe just a random inside joke- then everyone gets someone's sentence and draws it out. The next round everyone is given a picture and writes a sentence to describe it and the rounds go like this till the end.
Then in the end you watch it all back and it's hilarious to see it unfold. Learn how to play and play Gartic Phone:

Code Names
Code names can also be a board game but you can play the same thing using a website. It only requires three devices. One device we use for everyone to see and two devices per captain of the teams. It's a game of guessing and thinking! The captain gives hints and the team has to try to correctly guess the words they are referring to, the team with the most correctly guessed words wins! This game is one of my favourites, so you should definitely check it out!

SpyFall
For this game, every person needs their own phone/device. The Objective for the Spy: Guess the round's secret location based on others' questions and answers. Others: Identify the spy among them. Players ask each other questions about the location and try to guess which one is the spy since the spy doesn't know the location. This game requires thinking and talking amongst everyone and is a must-try!

5 Second Rule
This game is so simple, my family and I play it everywhere, during long trips in the car, while waiting for food at a restaurant, or on game night! The objective is to name 3 things in 5 seconds this might sound easy but when you are doing it you will fumble your words and it'll be hard to think! So test your wits with this game! This game only requires one device/phone.

Pictionary
Pictionary is played by dividing into teams, with one player drawing a picture to represent a word or phrase without using letters or verbal cues, while their teammates try to guess the word or phrase within a set time limit. All you need is pen and paper (we like to use an iPad and Apple pen then cast it to our TV screen)! This word generator is perfect for setting the level of difficulty and is easy to use:

Charades
In the classic game of Charades, players take turns acting out a word or phrase without speaking, and their teammates try to guess what it is within a time limit. I like to use a word generator in this game that can set the tone of difficulty as well!
