Aesthetic picnic essentials

August 10, 2021

If you are a regular Instagram user, you have more than likely come across photos of aesthetic picnics your friends or influencers may be having. If you want to achieve a picture-perfect picnic for your next outing, I might just be your go-to person. With the summer season in action and picnic season in full swing, find out what you need to take your picnic to the next level.

Step 1: Location

This point, although obvious, I find it is heavily overlooked. It is crucial to ensure the location chosen is excellent as it serves as a blank canvas. If the quality of your canvas choice is not the best, your final artwork, or picnic in this case will not reach its full potential. The two most common locations to host a picnic include the beach and a park in which the greenery is at the forefront. Picking one of these locations can put you one step closer to achieving your goal.

Step 2: Blanket

After you’ve chosen your location, you will need to set up the picnic. The first component is the blanket which can make or break your picnic. Think of the blanket like a home screen, a busy home screen background can be very hard on the eyes. Similarly, a picnic blanket is best when it contains a simple design or is neutral in tone, to not overwhelm the components which will be placed on top. Any blanket you have at home will do the job, but to achieve the best results, I would go for a blanket that meets the criteria above or one that matches the theme of the rest of the picnic.

Step 3: Pillows

This step is optional as pillows are not required for an aesthetic picnic, however, they do more good than harm at the end of the day. I would have to recommend that if you chose to include pillows, they complement your theme. This can be achieved by sticking to neutral tones or picking accent colours to help accentuate the colour theme of your choice.

Step 4: Basket

This step can yet again feel optional as a basket is not required, although it can be a great decorative tool to carry food or drinks for the picnic. I have noticed the majority of aesthetic picnics do contain this element so I am simply doing my job and reporting all the necessary information to you.

Step 5: Drinks

This is the part where it gets exciting, I promise. Drinks are such a fun element of these picnics, whether that be the drink flavours or packaging. Some chose to opt for store-bought options such as sparkling juice or wine which come in timeless glass packaging. Others go for beverage dispensers or mason jars which contain cocktail drinks often made at home combining the picnic goers’ favourite drink combinations. These are typically topped with fresh-cut fruits such as berries, lemons, and mint leaves for an added touch of freshness. The drinks are often accompanied by matching classy wine glasses that pair beautifully with the picnic.

Step 6: Charcuterie Board

Based on the thousands of Instagram photos under the picnic aesthetic hashtag, I can confidently confirm an aesthetic picnic cannot be achieved without a charcuterie board. This step is crucial as it elevates the picnic's vibe with perfectly intermingled foods adding a pop of colour and creativity to your picnic. Other foods seen at picnics include chocolate-covered strawberries, croissants, cake, sushi, pizza, sandwiches, salads, fresh fruits/vegetables, and the list could go on.

Step 7: Flowers

If your picnic is already filled with colourful foods, blankets, or pillows, this step can be skipped if you choose. If you do however notice your picnic may still be looking a little plain or it could use a final touch, flowers are your best friend. There is no way to go wrong with flowers as they can be a stunning addition to any picnic. Some common floral trends I noticed in these aesthetic picnics include roses, sunflowers, daisies, tulips, carnations, peonies, orchids, and baby breath. There is no right or wrong flower choice, rather the flower colours that best match the colour scheme of your picnic are likely the best go-to option.

I think it’s safe to say you are now ready to take on the planning for the next picnic with your family or friends this summer. After knowing these tips and tricks, your next outing can now be officially Instagram-approved.
