My Experience with Extracurriculars at OTU

April 2, 2025

The Thrill of Sports and Athletic Achievements

Being a Varsity Athlete in badminton has been one of the most exhilarating parts of my university life. It’s not just about the competition; it’s about the camaraderie, discipline, and resilience that come with being part of a team. Representing the university on the court, winning the Ridgebacks Rookie of the Year award, and receiving the OUA Academic Achievement Award were milestones that reaffirmed the value of hard work and perseverance.

Sports taught me time management and the importance of maintaining a balance between academics and extracurriculars. It’s a lesson I carry into other aspects of my life.

Leadership Through Peer Involvement

As a Peer Leader in the Faculty of Health Sciences, I had the opportunity to connect with students, share experiences, and contribute to a supportive learning environment. Hosting study nights with over 80 attendees was a testament to the power of community and collaboration. These events weren’t just about academics; they were about fostering a sense of belonging.

My journey as a Peer Mentor & Peer Leader and receiving the Peer Leader of the Month award showed me how impactful mentorship can be. It’s a role that’s about listening, guiding, and sometimes just being there for someone who needs support.

Bridging Cultures as an International Student Leader

Coming from an international background, I’ve always valued cultural diversity. My role as an International Student Leader (ISL) allowed me to help new students navigate their journey at Ontario Tech. Through the New Arrival Support Program (NASP), I met people from all over the world, each with unique stories and aspirations. It was fulfilling to assist them in settling into their new environment while learning from their perspectives.

Engaging in Research and Advocacy

One of the highlights of my time here was participating in research studies and the Brilliant Catalyst Challenge in the Fall of 2023. Tackling sustainability issues related to climate action was a thought-provoking experience. Although my team didn’t win, the honorarium we received was a reminder that every effort counts in making a difference.

Student Societies: The Heart of Campus Life

Being Vice President of the Kinesiology Student Association (KINESA) and an Events Coordinator has been an incredible leadership journey. Organizing events, collaborating with peers, and ensuring our activities were inclusive and impactful were rewarding challenges. These roles taught me the importance of teamwork, creativity, and effective communication.

Volunteering and Giving Back

Volunteering has always been close to my heart. From assisting at hospitals to being part of the medical team for the Durham 2023 ParaSport Games, every experience has taught me valuable lessons in empathy and service. These roles pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the broader community.

You might be wondering, how can I get involved in opportunities like these? My biggest tip is to regularly check your university emails, as faculties often share valuable opportunities that can connect you to such experiences. For example, I met a friend at a KINESA workshop who introduced me to hospital volunteering, which eventually led to my role on the medical team for the Durham 2023 ParaSport Games.

Similarly, I got the Varsity Student Athletic therapist position by connecting with professors and volunteering. I was able to be a student AT for the rowing and the badminton team with my friend, and we got so much knowledge and experience from travelling with the team to St. Catherine and getting the opportunity to meet other medical professionals and getting their guidance.

The Takeaway: Building a Holistic University Experience

Looking back, my time at Ontario Tech University has been a whirlwind of activities, achievements, and lessons. From the badminton court to student associations, and from research initiatives to volunteer opportunities, each experience has added a unique layer to my university journey.

To anyone considering diving into extracurriculars, I’d say go for it. These experiences not only enrich your resume but also shape you as an individual. They teach you about leadership, resilience, and the power of community—skills that are invaluable in any path you choose.

University life is what you make of it, and at Ontario Tech, the possibilities are endless. So, step out, get involved, and make every moment count!
