Navigating your first year as a transfer student at Ontario Tech

September 3, 2024

Being a transfer student can be a unique journey, balancing the experience of a first-year student while not quite being a "first-year student. As someone completing their first year as a transfer student, here are some tips to navigate this exciting transition successfully.

1) Get organized with technology:

  •  Download the Ontario Tech Mobile and Canvas App for instant access to your classes, schedules, and essential information.
  • Your student ID is available on the Ontario Tech Mobile App for easy access.
  •  Your laptop will be crucial for staying organized. Check the software portal each semester for required software to save money and access necessary apps.
  • Bookmark your Learn Dashboard; you’ll go back and forth throughout the semester!

2) Stay on top of your schedule:

  • Use Google Calendar to keep track of your class schedules and professors' office hours, which are often shared as calendar links through your school Gmail.
  • Google Docs are excellent ways to manage your notes and collaborate with peers from Accounting to Communications or study groups.
  • If Google isn’t your thing, Notion and One Note are also great tools.

3) Enhance your social life:

  • Explore clubs through the OTU student union - reach out and get involved. Remember, there are two campuses with different events throughout the year!
  • Check out the Ambassador program and faculty events to meet potential mentors and fellow students.
  • Consider logging your experiences through the Student Experience Record (SER) to showcase your skills on LinkedIn, making you a well-rounded candidate when looking for jobs!
  • Look into Practicum, Co-op, and Research Opportunities! These all help build your networks for the future and enhance your experience while at OTU.

4) Embrace the community:

  • Attend events and join clubs to make the most of your university experience. Remember, the connections you make can define your time here.
  • If you look around, you have a lot of support and a willing ear. People here are looking to meet people just like you. A friendly smile is all you need, and of course, some good conversations, and you'll make lasting relations.

So, my fellow Ridgebacks, whether you're seasoned students or just starting your journey, embrace the community around you. Attend those events, join those clubs, and make the most of your time here. In the end, you define your university experience. Thanks for joining
me on this reflective ride. Until next time, keep thriving in this incredible community we call home!🐾✨#OTUCommunity #RidgebackPride

With Love as always,
Alex
