Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

12 signs you're an engineering student

November 27, 2018

By Sarah Butts

Five hours of sleep is an accomplishment

You always intend to get at least eight hours like a responsible adult but those three assignments and two labs aren’t gonna get done themselves!

Survives solely on RedBull and coffee

Like every uni student, you’re gonna need some help to get through those long nights. Caffeine is truly an engineer student’s lifesaver.

You look like this during orientation freshman year

You’re so in love with being an engineering student, you actually start to bleed purple.

Mom’s home cooking has been replaced by Ubereats

For the next eight months, you’re on the Ubereats diet. It’s not quite like mom’s, but it will have to do! Besides, cooking for yourself is crazy talk; there’s no time for that!

The library is your new home

When there’s space, you’re pulling up a chair and stay in the library for hours on end. You’ve been here from when the sun sets to when it rises. You already eat and sleep here, so you might as well claim permanent residency.

You can’t go one minute without mentioning you’re an engineer

“What? That’s not me,” you say. Okay, sure; let’s say for you, this is not true. I guess when you’re in the best program and most valuable program it’s hard not to talk about it 24/7.

You know you’re in the wrong room if you see more than three girls

Face it- there’s only a handful of girls in engineering, so it’s no wonder you’d get a little suspicious.

Riding the bell curve

Who knows how many times you’ve barely passed an exam or an entire course because of a bell curve. Love it and respect it always.

Failed the midterm, but still manage to be top of the class

You may not be the best, but you’re better than everyone else. Props to you!

Have 2 midterms, 4 assignments, 1 presentation and 3 labs in one week

Maybe your profs didn’t get the memo you have other classes, but for the next month you’ll be doing nothing but studying. Better get to it!

Essays drive you insane

They don’t come up often, but when they do, you can bet it will take a long time to write.

This ruined your life in first year. It’s probably a piece cake looking back it now!
