Making reading week worthwhile
October 10, 2019
Are you the kind of person that struggles to find something to do during fall study week? Below are some ways you can make your five days off worthwhile.
Visit family and friends
If you’re not far away from home, take the next couple of days off to go home and see your family and friends. With almost a month (if not more into school), I bet you’re tired of making the typical student meals (or if you live on Residence, eating the cafeteria food). I would also recommend that you take advantage of the free laundry at home - I usually do! There’s just something about the way that my mom does laundry that makes the clothes smell more fresh compared to when I do laundry on my own.
Travel
Visiting home isn’t for you? If you have the money to do so, travel! Take advantage of the time off to relax and focus on something else besides school. It doesn’t have to be too extravagant, you can plan a quick trip to Niagara Falls, or someplace more local for a few days.
Plan a staycation
Alright… maybe your bank account doesn’t allow for you to travel. Consider planning a “staycation”. Here are some tips on how to plan a successful staycation:
- Create a budget
- Don’t be afraid to be a tourist in your own city
- Try new experiences
Work
I know what you’re thinking - this is the last thing that I want to be doing during my reading week. But something tells me that you’ve already gone ahead and spent most (if not all) of that money that you saved up over the summer. Try picking up some extra shifts at work - your bank account will be thank you later.
Do homework
Behind on homework? Or are you looking for a chance to get ahead of your readings? This is the perfect opportunity to do so. Here’s a little secret for you: reading week is called “Fall study week” on the Academic Calendar for a reason - it’s meant for you to do homework anyways.
Watch a new show
Besides taking a staycation or a mini-vacation, you can also watch a new Netflix series! My goal this reading week is to sit down and finally see what all the fuss is about when it comes to watching Pretty Little Liars. I know the show has been around for a while, but I’ve just never taken the time to sit down and watch it.
Play board games
Besides watching Netflix, spend time with your family and friends by playing board games. You could even make it a night out and go to Brew Wizards Board Game Cafe in Oshawa or Snakes and Lattes in Toronto.
Visit a Humane Society
Maybe board games aren’t your thing? That’s okay! Grab your animal obsessed friends and see if they want to go to the local Humane Society and walk the dogs or spend time with the cats that are there. Just remember you’re there to walk them, not adopt them.
Make a playlist
If you’re back from the Humane Society and you’re still bored, why not go ahead and start making different music playlists for the rest of the year? Start making those study playlists so that you don’t lose time making them when you really should be studying when you have that midterm two weeks from now.
Now that you have some ideas on what to do, get out there (or stay in bed if you’re planning a staycation) and enjoy yourselves this reading week!
