Ready for all the emotions: heartbreak playlist
February 12, 2021
Just like any normal breakup, there are three stages that go into getting over your ex, and this playlist is organized in the same fashion. Starting off with sadness, you will see the classics like Adele and new hits like driver’s license. My personal favourite is up next with ANGER! You spent so much time building this relationship just to end up in heartbreak. In this part, you will be teleported back to the early 2010s starting strong with CeeLo Green’s instant hit “F*** you” and slowly making our way to acceptance. Self-love and wishing all the best for your past lovers is the vibe we are going for in this section with the positivity queen herself, Lizzo and much more! The last section is honourable mentions. These are songs having to do with break-ups but don’t fit the vibe of the list. Disclaimer, this playlist contains curse words and NSFW content.
Sad
the broken hearts club - gnash - 3:04
I picked this song straight off my “sad boy” playlist. I enjoy listening to this song because it doesn’t try to make me feel better but has the ability to make my emotions feel valid and that I am not alone.
Someone Like You - Adele - 4:45
Adele always has me right in my feels. First loves, recent break-ups, and friendships turned sour- give yourself time to grieve. Regardless of good or bad, each person who comes into our lives leaves an impact; give yourself time to feel all your feelings.
driver’s license - Olivia Rodrigo - 4:02
I never thought I would have something in common with a 17-year old, but here I am crying to driver’s license alongside half of Tiktok users. Most of us cannot relate to the situation, but as soon as the bridge hits, it brings me back to high school crying about some boy who doesn’t know I exist.
Stay with Me - Sam Smith - 2:52
We are all guilty of sending that 3 a.m. text to our ex, trying to find an answer to why things didn’t work out. After a break-up, it is healthy to reflect on old memories. Trust me; it’s better to listen to some Sam Smith alone in your room than getting back together with your toxic ex-partner!
Another Love - Tom Odell - 4:10
Working through those sad emotions and starting to feel some anger; is perfectly natural. In this song, you can hear the artist showing the desire to move past crying and start feeling the anger that comes after break-ups; their voice is still hauntingly broken. Be prepared for the waterworks.
Angry
F*** You - CeeLo Green - 3:42
After a breakup, seeing your ex is the worst! Throwing it back to 2010, I know you have these lyrics in the back of your brain, so for this song to instantly change your mood, turn to full blast and sing along (trust me).
Gives You Hell - The All-American Rejects - 3:33
Going through a breakup leaves us with a number of different emotions and outlooks on the world. One of these being the concept of winner-loser in the relationship. This is lowkey toxic, but we are still working through it, so why not indulge?
Womanizer - Britney Spears - 3:44
Iconic. This song is absolutely ICONIC! In the song, Spears talks about a relationship in which the man she is seeing is a womanizer and basically played her. Most of us have been in a scenario where someone isn’t the same as they appear and can relate. Leaving womanizers in 2020 and looking for people who respect us in 2021!
Before He Cheats - Carrie Underwood - 3:19
We do not condone vandalism BUT it is fun to think about, right? Underwood’s song is one of the only country songs I can listen to (sorry not sorry), and this is one of my favourite anthems! Follow it up with Jazmine Sullivan’s “Bust Your Windows” and you are set for disaster.
So What - Pink - 3:35
At the end of the day, you are a Rockstar, you got your rock moves, and you don’t need them tonight! This is a perfect transition into accepting and moving past the breakup to continue to live your best life.
Accepting
Freakin’ Out On the interstate - Briston Maroney - 4:12
Working through your sadness, moving past angry and slowly making it to acceptance. The first step is recognizing the emotions you are feeling. The artist explains processing post-breakup sadness. The chorus ends with “love is what you deserve”, and that is a perfect send-off.
Kissing Other People - Lennon Stella - 2:41
The lyrics sound like having a conversation with a friend who recently went through a break-up; you are able to take yourself out of the situation and hear the advice of a friend going through the same thing as you. Check me screaming-singing, “I don’t feel guilty, kissing other people”!
r u ok - Tate McRae - 3:05
Transitioning from angry emotions and moving into acceptance. We are not responsible for fixing other people! While your ex hits you up (like they always do), remember the reasons why you broke up in the first place. You are going to THRIVE! Everyone comes into our lives with a purpose and some people live this out quicker than others; you are responsible for your mental well-being first and foremost.
thank u, next - Ariana Grande - 3:27
Understanding the lessons you learned from past relationships and moving past to find self-love. One thing my mother taught me was if you can’t love yourself who is going to? After a break-up, it is a good time to fall back in love with yourself.
Good as Hell - Lizzo - 2:39
Two words: Self-love. Throw on some Lizzo and take some much-needed ME TIME! My feel good Lizzo song is Good as Hell, but Truth Hurts, Boys, or Juice has the same effect.
Honourable mentions
New Rules - Dua Lipa - 3:29
Sometimes we slip up and fall into old patterns. Working through those destructive behaviours is a part of learning. Sing along with Dua Lipa and remember your boundaries and post-breakup rules!
Woman - Kesha (feat. The Dap-King Horns) - 3:36
For my ladies out there, it is important to remind yourself of the woman you were before your partner entered your life. Have an image of her? It’s time to BRING HER BACK! Grab your friends, family, or any other female-identifying person nearest and sing along!!
All I Wanted - Paramore - 3:45
Gosh, when Hayley William belts out “ALL I WANTED WAS YOOOOOOOOOOOU”. I can’t help but sing along and imagine myself back in grade 9 going through my emo phase where all I would listen to was Paramore and read Twilight books.
Hold Up - Beyonce - 3:41
We all remember when this song first came out and realized that Jay-Z had cheated on the Queen herself. For those of us not looking for Becky with the good hair, we were contemplating how this could have happened? Slowly but surely, the realization that it isn’t the fault of the person cheated on becomes apparent. We all know this to be true but when you are cheated on, it's hard not to self-blame.
Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye, Kimbra - 4:04
The worst part of a breakup for me is looking back at past relationships and realizing that these people who played a significant role in my life are no longer here. “Somebody That I Used To Know” sums up these feelings of loss but at the same time not forgetting why you decided to cut these individuals out.
