How to make the most out of your reading week

February 18, 2025

Congrats, it’s reading week! The time in the semester we all look forward to—no assignments due (hopefully), no early classes, just you, some extra free time, and a much-needed breather. But somehow, it always feels like reading week slips away without doing anything productive. So let me try to guide you through how to balance relaxing and getting things done during this week!

1. Take time to rest and recharge

First things first: rest is important! Don’t feel guilty about catching up on sleep or spending a whole day binge-watching your favorite series. Reading week is a time to refill your energy tank. So, make it a point to set aside at least a couple of days where you’re not even thinking about schoolwork. Sleep in, grab your favorite snacks, and just unwind.

2. Tackle the tough stuff slowly

Have you been avoiding a particular assignment or just dreading that big paper coming up? Reading week is a great time to break those big tasks into smaller, manageable steps. If you chip away at your workload a bit each day, you’ll feel a lot better going back to class. Set short, focused study periods followed by mini-breaks to avoid burnout. And hey, reward yourself when you check things off—every little bit counts!

3. Meet up with friends for a study date (or to hang Out)

Sometimes, studying with friends can make it feel less like work. Set up a casual study date with friends (virtual or in person) where you can quiz each other, talk through difficult topics, or even just share in the struggle together. You’ll get work done and stay social, too. And if everyone’s burned out, just go grab some coffee and chat.

4. Move a little (trust us, it helps)

It’s tempting to spend the whole week on the couch, but a little movement can actually boost your mood and energy. You don’t have to go to the gym; even a short walk around the neighbourhood, some yoga, or a dance party in your room can do wonders for clearing your mind. Exercise is a great way to fight off that reading-week slump.

5. Don’t over-plan, enjoy the break!

It’s easy to fall into the trap of overloading your reading week with tasks and goals. Remember, this break is here to give you some breathing room. Keep your plans light, leave room for spontaneity, and make sure you’re not stressing about what’s still on your to-do list.
