Top study spots: downtown campus edition

August 21, 2024

The downtown campus is a small yet quiet space. Despite being in the middle of downtown Oshawa, it is typically not as bustling as the North campus. The perk of not being on a busy campus is all the potential study spots you can easily find. So, if you’re a student who frequently goes to the downtown campus, here are some great spots to study!

Charles Hall

Charles Hall is the one building on the downtown campus with various study spots. It has a small cafe, Isabella’s, so when you’ve been studying for hours, it's nice to grab a drink or snack! Here are a few places to study in this building:

Empty classrooms

If you’re lucky, you may find an empty classroom that’s not in use. In the past, I’ve been able to study in classrooms! It’s quite nice if you’re looking for a space without distractions.

The library's open space & silent study room

Typically, a student's go-to study spot is the library. Charles Hall has a small library with various sitting areas, books, school materials, and computers. The library’s main space includes two study rooms if you need a private one.

Further into the library is the silent study room. This area has more large tables and privacy desks. This would be the spot to go to if you want to be in a quiet environment!

First-floor open lounge

This spot is near Isabella’s cafe. Typically, students might eat here since there is a microwave nearby. However, I often see students studying here too. The white tables are small, so if you plan on having your study materials laid out, this might not be the spot for you. Otherwise, it’s great!

Second-floor lounge space

When you walk into the 2nd floor of Charles, you’ll see a large study lounge with various seating areas. Large tables are great for study sessions with peers, and couches for lounging! Usually, during the fall and winter semesters, this area can get packed. So, this might not be the best place if you’re looking for a quiet spot. However, if you want a place to hang out with friends, I recommend this spot!

Student Life lounge

Besides the library, there is the Student Life lounge. Amenities, including the prayer room and Student Life offices, can be found there. You can also find open tables in this area, which could be a great place to study.

Bordessa Hall

Bordessa Hall is a building where you can find classrooms and research labs. The study spaces for students are limited, but when they are available, they are nice spots!

Empty classrooms

An empty classroom is the way to go! When I had a tutorial in this building, I would have much spare time before the class started. So, rather than walking back and forth between this building and Charles Hall, I would find a classroom in Bordessa and wait until my tutorial started! I recommend this to anyone with a few classes in this building.

Well, that covers all the study spots I prefer on the downtown campus! Good luck with your studying 🙂
