Why should you have a hobby outside of university?
November 7, 2024
You may think this isn’t a big deal, but having hobbies outside of academics is crucial! Hobbies enrich your daily life and can give you skills that are useful in other areas. Here, I’ll address why you should try some hobbies apart from university.
Provides balance
I often notice some of my friends say that all they focus on is academics–they wonder how other people can manage theirs while having a social life or even having the time to do other things besides school.
Having a hobby forces you to be consistent. Not only does it enhance your work-life balance, but it can also increase your productivity. Although it might seem like a hassle with your busy schedules, setting that time aside can help reduce burnout and provide overall fulfillment to your quality of life.
Hobbies can also help with skill development and benefit your personal life and professional career. The skills you'd develop from your hobby can be transferred to various areas!
Helps with socialization
Hobbies are great conversation starters and a way to socialize with your peers. Hobbies can form bonds and help you easily gain different support systems! For example, if you love to play video games, you’re bound to find someone who also enjoys it!
Allows you to de-stress
When academics become overwhelming, it’s nice to take that time to relax and reflect. Doing so allows you to take that needed break and understand how to improve your work ethic to complete your tasks more efficiently. To rewind, I enjoy spending a portion of my time reading, exercising, drawing, or baking. These small hobbies have a positive impact on my mental health and well-being.
Physical hobbies such as sports can greatly benefit you physiologically as they can increase your energy and brain function. By implementing a routine where you can be consistent with your hobbies and academics, you can remain productive while having fun!
Promotes positive mental and emotional health
Being involved in activities that you enjoy promotes positive emotions. Hobbies can reduce stress, improve your mood, further your social skills, and provide a sense of purpose. By familiarizing you with independence, your hobby reduces feelings of isolation.
Now that you know the benefits of having a hobby while at university, it’s important that you are consistent. Consistency is key to promoting good health by providing a routine you can continue. Without maintaining that routine, you may default to situations of negative emotions and unproductive behaviour!
