It is no secret that Black individuals as a minority have been suppressed and discriminated against in human history. This brings up the need for movements such as the BLM movement that has been in the news lately. Discrimination against a certain race is termed “racism.” However, discrimination is not restricted to one’s race only, it can take on many forms, and individuals can be discriminated against based on other aspects of their identity, including religion, nationality, gender, etc.

One such form of discrimination is discrimination against Muslims, the followers of the religion Islam. Islamophobia is the term used to define discrimination or prejudice towards Muslims. A single individual, however, can have multiple social identities, such as being a White Chrisitan American Woman or a Black Muslim Nigerian Man. The understanding that a single individual can have multiple identities in society leads to the development of a concept called intersectionality. Intersectionality is the acknowledgment that an individual might have different social identities. These interconnecting, overlapping identities add up to create unique challenges. In this post, we focus on one such group, Black Muslims. Islamophobia is a huge issue in today’s world, especially in western societies. It has resulted in hate crimes against Muslims, especially those who already suffer from racism because of their skin colour.

Our main goal is to raise awareness about Islamophobia and racism by highlighting some examples of great leaders who happen to be Muslim and of Colour. Below is a quiz to test your knowledge about two such famous Black Muslim leaders who are widely known in today’s day and age.
