My community and university volunteering experience

February 10, 2026

Volunteering during my university years has been an enriching experience. I gained valuable skills and connections along the way. As someone who typically wouldn't pursue leadership initiatives, I am glad I finally pushed myself out of my comfort zone! Here are some of the initiatives I participated in, both within and outside of Ontario Tech.

Students Recognizing Residents

Students Recognizing Residents (SRR) is a club at Ontario Tech, affiliated with the Ontario Tech Student Union. This club focuses on bridging the gap between university students and the elderly population. By volunteering at retirement homes, we can provide our seniors with memorable experiences that make them feel seen and valued through fun, interactive activities. Since volunteering with this club, my perspective has shifted, and I now make it my priority to remind those around me that they, too, are special and deserve to be recognized. In this club, we host a variety of fun events, including a disco party with the seniors, SRR Day, crafts, ornament making, and more!

Lakeridge Hospital

I began volunteering at Lakeridge Hospital in my first year. Volunteering at Lakerdige not only boosted my confidence but also improved my communication skills within fast-paced environments. Volunteering at a hospital can seem intimidating; however, volunteer resources and the hospital staff have been extremely helpful and welcoming. This is a great community service experience that offers an opportunity to speak with a diverse group of people. I hope to continue pursuing initiatives that support vulnerable populations and make them feel comfortable within their environment.

Social Science and Humanities Women's Collective

I always wanted to be more involved on my campus, and as a downtown student, I took it upon myself to join a club that both promoted our downtown campus and supported students in getting recognized. The women's collective is inclusive to all, but we particularly focus on providing additional support for women through academic and outreach supports. This initiative allowed me to be involved with my campus community and gain connections with my fellow peers who share the same vision! I hope to continue to help create an inclusive space where women can succeed by addressing their social, academic, and wellness needs through various networking and community development opportunities.

Footprints 4 Autism

Footprints 4 Autism is an organization that provides respite care for children on the autism spectrum. Volunteering at this organization provides them with the opportunity to play, interact, and socialize in an environment that best supports and meets their needs. Footprints 4 Autism was a great starting point. There were numerous responsibilities; however, it was what really helped shape my interests and guided me to pursue more opportunities.

Peer Mentorship Program

The Peer Mentor program is designed to help incoming students transition smoothly into university life. University can be a lot to tackle on your own, so having a mentor support you as you adjust to your new environment is extremely helpful! I joined the program in the hope of sharing with students what I wish I had known back then. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to help support students, as it has enabled me to gain connections and become familiar with the campus resources.

Ambassador Program

The ambassador program is a fun and engaging development opportunity that helps shape students into campus leaders. Through this initiative, I led workshops, tours, and volunteered at open houses and orientations. This was one of my first volunteer experiences on campus, and I’m so glad I signed up for it! It’s what led me to get a job with Student Life, and it helped me grow both professionally and personally.

University Works

I highly encourage students to join University Works. It’s both a paid opportunity where you can work in a position that either aligns with your interests or career aspirations. Being exposed to a working environment early on can prepare you and help you gain transferable skills that you can apply in many other positions. It also led me to meet so many people, including mentors and friends!

I think many students should consider volunteering or joining a club. This exposes you to potential career and personal interests and is also an excellent opportunity to network and meet new people. These experiences have broadened my perspective and encouraged me to continue seeking roles that challenge me and push me to grow.
