How to stick to a schedule during the summer as a university student
June 15, 2026
It’s been a month since the winter semester ended, and I know some of you have a busy summer ahead of you. Whether that’s due to taking summer courses, working, studying, pursuing research initiatives, engaging in extracurricular activities, or even going on vacation, maintaining momentum during the summer months can be a challenge. I’m here to share how you can manage your time wisely, so that you can have a productive summer!
Yes, I am aware that I do not know your exact schedule, which is why you should take my advice and tweak it based on your personal endeavors.
Set fixed time points
Having a consistent wake-up schedule will benefit you significantly. Even if you don't have classes in the mornings anymore, getting up at the same time consistently is great for your overall health. This will generously optimize your circadian rhythm, help you fall asleep faster and give you more energy throughout the day!
Dress up to initiate a productive day
This is something I love to do! Rather than staying in your pajamas or home clothes, change into an outfit you’ll wear when you're outside. I like to think this signals my brain to get to work, and it does make me feel more motivated to complete any tasks when I’m at home.
Have fixed commitments
If you're working a summer job or even want to go to the gym, try to work your schedule around that. That could help you determine what time you need to wake up every morning, when you should study, and when you should complete any side tasks, like doing your laundry. These distinct events, such as having a job, can help build a consistent schedule.
Time block your day
What I mean by time block is that you want to divide your day into three sections; so schedule a set number of hours for sleeping (usually 8 hours or more), 8 hours for productive work (job, classes, studying, skill-building), and then the remaining hours you have can be used for hobbies or spending time with friends and family.
Group similar tasks during the same time
This helps me a lot. Sometimes I have little tasks I need to get done, which I easily put off. So I usually pick a time, and I force myself to get it done before taking a break. This could be as simple as sending any emails or responding to messages. These small “admin” tasks then get out of my way. I usually block out time in the mornings to get that done!
Use a digital calendar
I recently started using a calendar for everything. For example, if I’m hanging out with friends, I like to add it to my calendar. This can act as a reminder so that when I continue to block out time for a specific activity, I generally know what my day will look like. I like to use Google Calendar, or if you want to be extra organized, set up a Notion!
Schedule leisure time!
I can’t stress this enough: to live a healthy life, you need to schedule your breaks. I know university students generally continue with their academics or extracurriculars into the summer, so it's important to block out time where you can relax; otherwise, you're bound to burn out, and I’m speaking from experience!
Find a local spot to be productive
I know for some of you, getting things done at home can be a struggle, so why not try going outside? Consider working in a new environment, like on campus, at the library, or at a cute cafe! Getting outside can help you hold yourself accountable. For example, I might go to the library with things I need to get done in mind, so I’ll only go home once it's all done, so I can take my break.
I hope this helps! Once again, I know that everyone's summer will look different, but know that regardless of your summer plans, you can implement these suggestions and maintain a productive schedule! You got this. I believe in you.
Goodluck!!
