The importance of self-reflection

May 22, 2026

Self-reflection is incredibly important for your own personal development, as it improves your well-being and helps you get a better grip on life! When life gets hectic, especially during university, it's easy to lose track of important things. But I’m confident that when you take the time to reflect on yourself, your life will evolve! Not only will you feel more assured in yourself during challenging times, but you’ll feel more prepared to take on new experiences.

What’s self-reflection

So, what is self-reflection exactly? Well, self-reflection is when an individual deliberately analyzes their own thoughts, emotions, and actions to foster personal growth, strengthen their emotional capacity, and improve how they make decisions in their daily lives. In a way, you're also holding yourself accountable for your actions, helping you recognize personal responsibility and even hold yourself to your own goals.

By reflecting on yourself, you strengthen your awareness. When you self-reflect, you can get to the bottom of things, helping you recognize your core values, relationships, and what shapes you as a person.

My experience with self-reflection

I remember during university, I applied for an opportunity I really wanted, and when I found out I didn’t get it, it really sucked. Initially, I was devastated and unsure how to move forward. If you guessed it, yes, I started thinking negatively about myself and felt less motivated. But I suddenly thought to myself, I can control how I think; in fact, I can rewire it simply by switching how I choose to view my situation. So I did. Instead of being so negative, I redirected my thinking and pursued other opportunities. Spoiler alert, it all worked out!

So when I think back on all the times I felt I wasn't good enough, I like to remind myself of the importance of self-reflection! It’s really what's helping me get through university and life in general.

Benefits of self-reflection

There are tremendous benefits associated with self-reflection. Here are a few I know!

Builds self-awareness: It helps you discover your personal strengths, even your weaknesses, beliefs, and what negatively impacts you. This is very important as it helps you improve your emotional regulation and confidence.

Improves decision-making: Self-reflection allows you to reevaluate your past experiences and the decisions you made. By evaluating them again, you can make better, more intentional decisions.

Personal Growth and Learning: Reflecting on yourself enables you to grow as a person. You’re now able to have a better understanding of your past actions and how you can avoid making the same mistakes. It's like a great learning opportunity, so take advantage of it!

How to practice self-reflection in your life!

So you’re probably wondering, how can I implement self-reflection in my life in tangible ways? Well, you must consider trying some of these strategies!

Journaling: Consider keeping a notebook to record your thoughts and feelings, which can help you identify your behaviour and emotions in specific situations. I recommend finding prompts online that encourage self-reflection. Some examples include “What did I learn today” or “What is one thing I need to stop doing and start doing”.

Ask reflective questions: Reflective questions are like a structured tool that forces you to analyze specific experiences that have affected your emotions, beliefs, and behaviours. By asking yourself "why", "what", or "how", you go from passive to active thinking. This can help you identify patterns and areas for improvement.

Meditate: Meditation is essential to promote mindfulness; it allows you to look deeply into your mind and body! So try practicing sitting in silence. During mediation, you may come across thoughts that stick with you. Be sure to pay attention to those to help understand why.

You have the power to change and improve your emotional patterns, thinking, and behaviour. By recognizing what is holding you back, you can assess it and determine what you need to work on yourself! So don’t give up because if I can do it, so can you <3
